Halo Online is about to enter a closed beta phase in Russia. That’s the only country announced so far for this upcoming shooter. The game is a free-to-play title, is exclusive to the PC platform and runs off of a modified version of the Halo 3 engine.
That last bit, according to 343 Industries, was done in order to make this game playable on low-end PCs. That’s the whole deal with free-to-play titles. You want as many people playing them as possible.
Previously, we didn’t have much to go on regarding how Halo Online would look in motion. Now, we have a gameplay trailer. To be quite honest, it doesn’t look too bad at all. And, I do believe a bunch of these maps I recognize as slightly altered versions of Halo 2and Halo 3 areas. Am I crazy?
Halo Online will only feature a multiplayer side. The game’s beta phase will help 343 Industries, with support from Saber Interactive and Innova Systems, tweak the gameplay and in-game economy before taking it to the next stage.
Who knows if we’ll see this beyond Russia. There’s certainly a market for it internationally, but I assume Microsoft wants to test the waters before going wide with this release. We’ll have more on Halo Online as it comes.
