Gryffin a open-sourced Web Security Scanning Tool by Yahoo



Gryffin, the new project has been published to Github in beta under the BSD-style license, and Yahoo! says that it is more than just another scanner, as it aims at addressing two issues that current initiatives have, namely coverage and scale.

Gryffin's crawler also uses PhantomJS for DOM rendering and navigation, which allows it to discover links and code paths in rich applications that are heavily driven by client-side JavaScript. However, the scanning platform does not have fuzzer modules, even for common vulnerabilities like XSS and SQL Injection, as it wants to allow users to fuzz for just what they need.

While every such platform aims to achieve low false positive rates, Yahoo also desired to provide a broader coverage and an elastic infrastructure.

Gryffin has been released as a standalone package, but Yahoo! says that it is actually build for scale, on the publisher-subscriber model. The platform’s components are either publishers or subscribers, or both, which allows it to scale horizontally by adding new nodes to it.

Datawind has travelled down a long and controversial path to officially launching the commercial version of the Aakash tablet, the Ubislate. And they did seem highly excited about it, repeatedly claiming: “This is not a product launch, this is a revolution.” But are such hyperbole justified for a product that is so late to the game that it has left many who pre-ordered with a bad taste in their mouth? Will it really trigger a digital revolution among the masses, or will it fizzle out into the dark annals of public memory? We go hands-on to find some answers.

Let’s start with the specs, both the Ubislates, 7+ and 7C are pretty much identical, save for the resistive screen on the 7+ and the capacitive screen on the 7C:

  • 7.0-inch display with an 840x480 pixel resolution
  • 800 MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, with a graphics accelerator and HD video processor.
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS
  • Memory:  7+: 256mb RAM with 2 GB internal flash storage  /  7c: 256mb RAM with 4 GB internal flash storage
  • Memory expandable up to 32GB with a microSD card
  • One full USB 2.0 port
  • GPRS with Wi-Fi a/b/g
  • Rated with 3 hours of battery life with a 3200 mAh battery

As far as hardware goes, both Ubislates feel sufficiently sturdy, with a matte plastic finish that feels pretty good in the hand, and does not betray its price. There were a few visible compromises though, such as the microSD card slot, which has been fashioned in such a way that the card juts out of the main body of the tablet and goes only about halfway in. We can easily imagine a fall breaking the microSD card, or even the internals of the slot itself. Coming back to the physical body of the device, it lives in that middle ground of thin and fat that is quite ergonomic to hold and we were quite pleased with it, considering the price.

On the software front, they ran a stock version of Android 2.3, modified a bit to run with on-screen touch buttons, which are one of our major gripes with the tablet. The touch buttons basically live on the notification bar, and thus, one can imagine how small and finicky they were. More than half the time during our hands-on we would not be able to make them work and they didn’t exactly spell intuitive. There was also a physical Home button, which was sufficiently springy, but a bit oblong and hard to notice.

Another one of our gripes is the exclusion of all Google services from the device. Instead, Datawind has opted to go for Yahoo integration as far as mail is concerned and GetJar for apps, neither of which are as well-made or all-encompassing as Google’s own Gmail and Play store. Also, surprisingly, the 720p HD playback on the screens was quite pleasant, a little slow while seeking, but all in all a solid experience.

Touch sensitivity was altogether a different ball-game. The resistive screen on the 7+ was one of the more sensitive resistive panels we’ve seen, and reminded us more of the Nokia N900 than a cheap Chinese iPhone clone, which is always a good thing. But, it was still aeons away from a capacitive panel, and that’s where the 7C came in. But, alas, the touch sensitivity was limited by the hardware at play here and though we didn’t think that the 800 MHz processor would be a bottleneck, it is our suspicion that it’s the limited amount of RAM that is responsible for the lag. Again, considering the price, it was still quite acceptable.

There was a recurring theme with our first hands-on of the fabled Ubislates, there seemed to be many compromises, but the price absolutely blew them away. At  2,999 for the 7+ and 3,999 for the 7C, our complaints with the devices failed to gain ground. For the price, they offer a good value-for-money proposition and it would be interesting to see how well they do in the Indian market and whether they are able to bring out a digital revolution. Consumers that have pre-booked the Ubislate 7+ should start receiving them shortly and retail availability would only start once all pre-bookings have been fulfilled. Delivery of the Ubislate 7C on the other hand will start near the end of May.

Gone are the days when a mobile phone was judged by its design. In the past, no one really cared about the speed of the interface or the number of pixels in the display, a phone was popular because of the brand and the design. Skip to the present and the mobile phone industry (tablets included) is actually competing with the PC market. Companies have always talked about how the mobile phone is like a computer in your pocket and looking at the latest trend of smartphones, that line is starting to blur. Naturally, just like any computer, the CPU is the first to go through major changes since at the end of the day, your camera, screen resolution, apps and OS can only improve if the CPU gets more powerful. 

Smartphones have gone from single-core to dual-core and now quad-core and it’s only going to keep increasing. With companies throwing around terms like Snapdragon, Tegra 3, Mali-400, Cortex-A9, etc., it’s a daunting task to keep up with the different CPUs and chipsets in the market, even for us! You’ve heard the terms SoC being used very often in spec sheets and reviews, so what is it?   

What is a SoC? 
SoC is short for System on a Chip, an integrated circuit that combines all the primary components of a computer into a single chip. Think of your CPU, graphics card, memory controller and other components all rolled into a single chip, that’s essentially an SoC. This way, handset manufactures can simply drop this chip in their device and reap the benefits of the chipset straight away, rather than having to implement the CPU, GPU, etc. manually. Below, we have two popular SoCs, the first being an Nvidia Tegra 3 and the second, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 SoC.

Notice that Nvidia’s SoC only features the GPU, memory controller and video out streams whereas Qualcomm has managed to package all of that as well as the wireless radios like GPS, Wi-Fi, LTE, etc as well in that single chip. This is because the Qualcomm uses a smaller fabrication process (28nm) for the S4 chip allowing them to add more components into a single piece of silicon. Nvidia on the other hand is still on the 40nm fabrication for Tegra 3 so that’s why they can’t cram in more than that without increasing the size of the chip. 

ARM is where the heart is 
Today, a majority of mobile phones, tablets, wireless routers, digital media players, hand-held gaming consoles and many computer peripherals are powered by an ARM microprocessor. Just like Intel and AMD, ARM is a 32-bit microprocessor originally created by Acorn Computers back in 1987. Since then, ARM has been the preferred microchip by any and all companies looking for a cheap and more importantly, low-powered chip for portable devices. ARM uses a completely different architecture as compared to Intel and AMD, who’ve stuck with the x86 architecture and hence, all three companies have happily co-existed. With Windows 8 all set to support ARM devices as well, that equation may soon change.

Since the ARM architecture is licensable, companies can either obtain an architectural licence to design their own, customized CPU or simply choose from one of ARM’s ready-to-ship core designs. Popular core design from ARM include ARMv7, ARM9, ARM11, Coretex-A8, Cortex-A9 and the most recent, Cortex-A15. Companies like Nvidia, Texas Instruments, Samsung and Apple (to name a few) simply choose one of these designs and packages them along with a GPU and other components, into their own branded SoC. However, SoC manufacturers like Qualcomm prefer to design their own custom CPUs rather than go with the crowd. ‘Krait’ is the latest CPU, designed by Qualcomm and is used in their new Snapdragon S4 SoC. 

What’s the deal on the different GPUs? 
Unlike the CPU component in an SoC that’s primarily supplied by ARM, the graphics portion is manufactured by multiple vendors which gives companies the flexibility to pick and choose which GPU goes best with the CPU in their SoC. While back in the day, the primary job of the graphics card was rendering 3D images and displaying them on the screen, today GPUs are used for much more than just playing games and are as crucial as the CPU, if not more. Today’s operating systems like Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich rely heavily on the GPU since the interface and all the animations are rendered on the graphics chip, which is how you’re able to get the buttery smooth transition effects. It also comes in handy when watching HD videos. Just like its PC component, a graphics chip essentially has more cores than a CPU thereby allowing it distribute the load better and leaving the CPU free for other tasks. Take Nvidia’s Tegra 3 for instance, this SoC packs in 12 GPU cores. Below are some of the most popular vendors for GPUs.

ARM Mali 
Mali is a series of GPUs produced by ARM. Unlike other GPUs though, the Mali chip doesn’t actually have any display controller built-in to dive the LCD panel. Instead, it’s just a pure 3D engine that does the job of rendering graphics into memory. The most popular chip is the Mali-400 MP, a quad-core GPU that’s used in plenty of SoCs like Samsung’s Exynos and ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor. 

Qualcomm Adreno 
Previously known as Imageon, ATI developed this line of media processors back in 2002 for handheld and mobile devices. It later came to be known as AMD Imageon when AMD bought ATI in late 2006. After some company restructuring, AMD officially discontinued this line of mobile media chips in 2008 only to be bought by Qualcomm later that year for $64 million. After Qualcomm stepped in, they changed the branding to Adreno since AMD retained the Imageon title. Adreno has since been used in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoCs, their most popular ones being the Adreno 205, Adreno 220 and the most recent, Adreno 225. 

Imagination PowerVR 
PowerVR is a division of Imagination Technologies that started out making graphics solutions for desktop PC market but over the years, dropped out and have since been making low powered media chips for mobile devices. PowerVR GPUs aren’t manufactured by PowerVR themselves but instead, they licence their design and patents to other companies like Texas Instruments, Intel, Samsung, Apple, etc. Their PowerVR SGX series have been quite popular and featured in many prime-time commercial products.

Nvidia Geforce 
The name Geforce is synonymous with graphics cards ever since they introduced it, way back in 1999. NVidia developed these graphics chips in-house and till now, only feature in their own Tegra SoC. Their latest Tegra 3 SoC ups the ante by offering a 12-core GPU making it roughly three times more powerful than its predecessor.  

Putting it all together 
So we’ve talked about what SoCs actually are and the different CPUs and GPUs that are out there in the market. Now, it’s time to put it all together and look at some of the popular SoCs in the market along with their accompanying phones. Now that you know which SoC sits in your phone, it’s time to take a look at where it stands amongst the competition. For this, we turn to AnTuTu, a very popular benchmarking program for Android handsets that gives you a rough idea of how powerful a smartphone is. This is just a synthetic benchmark though but like PCMark Vantage for the PC, it gives you a fair idea of where your handset stands. Not all phones are created equal so there is a very good chance that your model will have a slightly different score, whcih is perfectly normal.

The bottom line 
We really hope that this article cleared out most of the doubts and questions you’ve had about mobile chipsets. Companies will often try and market their SoCs with fancy names and slogans but it's important to look past that when you’re making your buying decision. Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell the exact details of which CPU or GPU is used in the SoC directly from the box since they don’t mention it usually so the only way to check is to do a little digging online. We’ve also seen from AnTuTu and our SoC chart that not all 1GHz phones are created equal. While they may look the same on the face of it, one could have a faster GPU, thereby giving you better multimedia performance. We keep saying this time and time again but do a little homework before heading out to the shops with your shopping list; it goes a long way in getting the best for your money.

After eons of speculations, rumours and what not, Google Drive has finally arrived! Direct competition to other cloud storage solutions like Dropbox, Skydrive and Box.net, with Google Drive, the company is aiming to, like with all its other products and services, grab top spot in this emerging and rapidly developing cloud space. It was launched yesterday and we did manage to grab a copy of Google Drive before it started showing the ‘Your Google Drive is not ready yet’ notification for most users. So, here are our initial impressions on what’s new with Google Drive.

As far as the web interface is concerned, Google Drive has straightaway replaced Google Docs, but besides the name, there’s not much that has been changed as of now. The web version of Google Drive also consists of a link where you can download the Google Drive application for your Mac or Windows PC so you can sync all your data across multiple devices and platforms. This also means that you don’t need to carry a separate installer or setup file and simply log in to your account to get the installer.

In the web interface, upon clicking upload, you’re greeted with your currently used and available storage, which is capped to 5GB for all free users at present. An option to buy more storage is available as well. 25GB is available at a price of $2.49 (approx Rs. 131) per month while 100GB is available at a price of $4.99 (approx Rs. 262) per month. Up to 16 TB of storage can be bought currently at $799 (approx Rs. 41,983) per month.

Sharing is just like it was on the older Google Docs and you can choose who is the owner, who can edit and who can view your document. With Google Drive, uploading is not restricted to plain documents anymore. Naturally, the editing though can be done only with documents.

Next up is the application that resides on your Mac or Windows PC. Basically, this is just a folder where you can dump all your data and it will instantly sync with all your data in the cloud. It’s as simple as drag and drop and your data is accessible on each and every device of yours that has Google Drive enabled. Just like on the web version, a few options for sharing data have been included in the desktop version as well.

The app for Android is pretty much unchanged as well, besides the naming bit. However, now that you can download and upload other files and not just documents, you can sync your favourite music and videos as well. The main problem with that is that you can’t stream or play it from the cloud itself, the file needs to be downloaded on to your device, which is definitely a drawback. Another important thing to note is that other Cloud storage solutions like Dropbox and Box.net have a security passcode feature that the user has to enter, which Google Drive at present doesn't have. So, whoever gets access to your phone, can easily access all your data on the cloud, which is definitely not somethin we'd want. The mobile website for Google Drive isn’t particularly impressive. We tried the mobile site on our BlackBerry and it was definitely not a pleasant experience. If they do manage to get a simpler and easier to use mobile site, Drive will definitely get an edge over its competitors.

To be honest, the interface on all the versions could still become easier and simpler to use, but the productivity is definitely there. For those with Gmail accounts, Google Drive is definitely a pretty nifty option considering it’s now part of your ecosystem. But, as we mentioned earlier, there are already so many cloud based storage options available. Google needs to push Google Drive out on multiple platforms including WP7, BlackBerry, Symbian and Bada to gauge a wider audience and acceptability. To wrap it up, Google Drive is a good start and for consumers, it’s another 5GB data you can store for free.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier Multiplayer hands-on


Ghost Recon Future Soldier takes the conventional Ghost Recon formula and slaps it on with some fast-paced gameplay to create a game that could appeal to fans of the series as well as newcomers weaned off Call of Duty.

As you boot up Ghost Recon Future Soldier for the first time, it’s obvious the guys at Ubisoft have evolved the franchise (or at least the multiplayer bit) into something more fast paced, inspired by games like Gears of War and Call of Duty. Now that change is fine by me but traditional Ghost Recon fans may get a bit put off by the fast paced action. 

The beta offers players two modes to dabble in across two pretty diverse maps. You have Conflict, an objective-based take on traditional Team Deathmatch and Sabotage, a game mode in which each team has to secure an explosive device and then successfully plant and detonate it in the opposition’s base. Even though this was a beta I was pretty impressed with the fact that I could join games easily. Unfortunately nearly every game I joined was plagued by heavy lag. Now I’m not sure if this was an issue on their server side as they weren’t prepared for the load or if this was my connection acting up but in every match I played, there was significant bullet lag and choppy movement.

The demo offers players three classes to try out – Rifleman, Engineer and Scout. The Rifleman is obviously your frontline defense capable of obliterating enemy presence with assault rifles and light machine guns. The Engineer on the other hand can deploy a UAV device and pin-point enemy locations to the rest of the team. The Scout is more proficient with long ranged weapons and can even turn invisible for a brief period of time. Now even though this game may seem like it offers run-and-gun gameplay, which by the way it does, co-ordination is still very important to succeed. Take Conflict for example; in this game mode you could rack up a good kill/death ratio but unless your team completes the objectives, you will lose the round.

If you’ve played any third person cover based shooter in the past year, you’ll be at ease with GRFS’s control scheme. However I do wish Ubisoft had included a tutorial in the beta because it just sort of throws you in the deep end without a paddle and expects you to swim. But play a few rounds and you’ll learn the lay of the land. You’ll also learn very fast that cover is your best friend because this game does carry the infamous Ghost Recon trait of killing you very easily. Unlike most shooters where your character is capable of absorbing a lot of damage, bullets in Ghost Recon feel more lethal keeping the tactical vibe of this game partially alive. Cover in GRFS thankfully is highly responsive and moving from cover to cover feels and looks fluid. The game even allows you to switch to a first person perspective if that’s your thing but I really don’t recommend it unless you’re sniping. It definitely feels a bit clunky.

The beta also gives players a taste of Gunsmith, a new feature added into this game that allows you to customize your weapon like never before. Upon entering the Gunsmith menu, players can virtually take their guns apart and tool with every aspect of a weapon from muzzles to triggers and everything in-between. You can then take your prized possession and try it out on the firing range before you use it in combat. Very cool!

A few issues aside, I quite enjoyed GRFS’s multiplayer. It takes the conventional Ghost Recon formula, slaps it on with some fast-paced gameplay, a progression system and an in-depth weapon customization tool to create a game that could appeal to fans of the series as well as newcomers weaned off Call of Duty. This being a beta, I did encounter some noticeable lag issues but hopefully all that will be ironed out when GRFS ships for the Xbox360 and PS3 by the 25th of May 2012.
